Status quo of the domain industry

The domain registrar InterNetX and domain marketplace Sedo have recently published their joint Global Domain Report. The document includes numerous data sets and analyses about the status quo of the domain branch in 2020.

130 million data sets were collected and analyzed for the report. The internal data analyses by Sedo and InterNetX were augmented by data sources from third parties such as VeriSign, CENTR and nTLDstats.

The report is divided into three sections. First the reader is given an overview of the domain market, starting from the registry to the end customer. In the second section, information is provided from the perspective of the registrar InterNetX. The final section portrays the viewpoint of Sedo as a secondary market.
The report clarifies the current situation on the market. The domain branch is undergoing change with regard to new registrations. 369 million domains have been registered to date. Of these, 147.2 million are registered under .COM alone. Alternatives have to be found under other TLDs. The report therefore also looks at finding solutions: What does the domain search of the future look like? Are there suitable alternatives under the 1,189 new gTLDs? And what can registrars offer their customers to enable the optimal buying experience?

Furthermore, the number of domain sales on the secondary market is still increasing. The secondary markets have experienced a strong influx in recent years. The reason for this shift can also be found in the vast number of domains that have already been registered. However, it also shows that the need for domains has not been met yet.
